How To Set S.M.A.R.Ter Goals

I’ve never loved New Years Resolutions. To me they’ve always been not very well thought out ideas of how the year should be. I’d set New Years Resolutions for years before deciding that it just wasn’t working out for me and so this year I’ve decided to set goals.

However, goal setting has never been something that comes easy to me. I always have a vague idea in mind but really struggle being specific. Studies have also shown that the goals that fail are usually the ones that aren’t specific or measurable.

Here’s an example of a badly set goal.

I want to lose weight.

Now here’s an example of a well set goal.

I want to reduce my body fat through exercise and eating well by 5% in 6 months.

Why is this a well set out goal?

It’s because it’s Specific– I want to lose 5% body fat.

It’s because it’s Measurable – weighing myself on a body fat scale will show my progress.

It’s because it’s Action-Oriented – exercising and eating well will help me achieve my goal.

It’s because it’s Realistic – 1% body fat loss is achievable for most people per month.

It’s because it’s Time-Based – I want to achieve this goal in 6 months.

If you follow the SMART model, you should be able to create goals that are easy to keep track of and achieve and hopefully being able to do those things will provide you with the added motivation to keep at it.

I’ve come up with a few goals for this year and have broken them up into different parts of my life

Health

  • To reduce body fat by 5% through exercise and eating well in 6 months
  • To not smoke for 3 months
  • To exercise 4 times a week for 3 months

Financial

  • To save $250 a month for 20 months in order to enrol into a life/health coaching course.
  • Arrange to pay $200 a month to HECS debt by March.
  • Only purchase lunch one Friday a month and bring lunch from home all other work days.

Lifestyle

  • Declutter, throw out/donate and organise one space each month for 12 months.

Personal

  • To be able to do a split on left and right leg by the end of 2017
  • To be able to do a back and front walkover by the end of 2017
